Monagi is the artistic project of Ghent-based songwriter and producer Jess Jacob. Before starting Monagi, Jess spent over a decade playing guitar in bands such as Tout Va Bien, Piquet and Ganashake. In 2022, he stepped into the spotlight with his own music, deliberately choosing French as a way to tell personal stories with honesty and nuance.

Monagi’s indie pop blends the warmth of 70s pop with the idiosyncrasies of contemporary indie. The lyrics are sometimes satirical, sometimes ambiguous, sometimes tender, but always sincere.

Following a series of well-received singles, Monagi released its debut album Tout ce temps, which received glowing reviews from French music magazine Maze.fr, praising its distinctive sound and strong songwriting. With the follow-up album, Tête dans les nuages, Monagi continued to develop that artistic direction. The cinematic record explores themes of lost dreams, memories and the paths we choose not to take.

Live, Monagi has supported artists including Zimmerman and Belgian indie band Ão, performing at renowned venues such as Ancienne Belgique in Brussels.

Monagi’s more recent songs are written in English and embrace a less polished sound, drawing comparisons to Wilco, Andy Shauf, Fleetwood Mac and Big Thief.

Monagi is het artistieke project van de Gentse songwriter en producer Jess Jacob. Voor hij Monagi oprichtte, was Jess ruim tien jaar actief als gitarist bij bands als Tout Va Bien, Piquet en Ganashake. In 2022 trad hij voor het eerst naar voren met zijn eigen muziek en koos hij bewust voor het Frans om persoonlijke verhalen op een eerlijke en genuanceerde manier te vertellen. Monagi’s indie pop mixt de warmte van 70’s pop met de eigenzinnigheid van hedendaagse indie. De lyrics zijn soms satirisch, soms dubbelzinnig, soms teder, maar altijd oprecht.

Na een reeks goed ontvangen singles verscheen het debuutalbum Tout ce temps, dat lovende recensies kreeg van het Franse muziekblad Maze.fr vanwege de eigenzinnige sound en sterke songwriting. Met het tweede album, Tête dans les nuages, zette Monagi die artistieke lijn verder. De filmische plaat verkent thema's als verloren dromen, herinneringen en de wegen die we kiezen niet in te slaan.

Live stond Monagi in het voorprogramma van onder meer Zimmerman en de Belgische indieband Ão, en speelde de band op gerenommeerde podia zoals Ancienne Belgique in Brussel.

Monagi's recentere songs worden gebracht in het Engels en zijn minder gepolijst. Ze doen denken aan Wilco, Andy Shauf, Fleetwood Mac of Big Thief.
